Korumburra handed out a belting to Phillip Island when the two sides met earlier in the year, but the Island team has improved considerably since then. This was evident from the first bounce, and it didn’t take long for Brodie Johnston to snag the first goal for the Island. Cieren Wood followed up with another, and Tyron Sandback who was badly injured against Korumburra last time scored the third Island goal for the quarter. At the other end of the ground the back line was standing firm, repelling any Korumburra attacks.

Q1, Phillip Island 3.2.20 to Korumburra 0.1.1

The game tightened up in the second quarter. Phillip Island had a number of shots on goal but could only manage 5 behinds.

Q2, Phillip Island 3.7.25 to Korumburra 0.2-2

Korumburra stepped up a notch in the third term, beating Phillip Island to the ball, and swarming in numbers towards their goal. Eli Richards scored one goal for the Island, but that was it, and by the quarter’s end the Island’s lead was reduced to 10 points and the momentum was with Korumburra.

Q3, Phillip Island 4.8.32 to Korumburra  3.4.22

It all came down to the last term. Phillip Island started brilliantly with Alex Officer and Jarrod Black scoring quick goals. When Jye Kartinyeri marked and goaled, the game was nearly out of Korumburra’s reach. Tyron Sandback put the issue beyond doubt with his second goal. The old firm of Arie Cook and Max Francis were solid as a rock across half back, and Eli Richards continuously drove the ball forward out of the middle. But it was the even team performance right around the ground that made the difference.

Final scores: Phillip Island 9.11.65 to Korumburra 4.4.28

Coach Laurie Angwin praised the boys saying it was one of the best wins for the season, and it was a great lead in to the finals.
