After a narrow loss against top side Killy-Bass the previous week, this game against Fish Creek was a must win game for the Island, with both teams locked on 9 wins for the season. Phillip Island started well with Eli Richards giving plenty of drive around the ground and setting up scoring opportunities. Unfortunately the Island couldn’t capitalise, and it was Fish Creek that scored the first goal. Things got worse when Fish Creek followed up with a second and third goal, while the Island could only manage behinds.

Quarter time scores Phillip Island 0.4.4 to Fish Creek 3.3.21

Things went from bad to worse in the second quarter, with Fish Creek running hard at the ball while Phillip Island was tentative and could not get any flow into their game. Fish Creek scored two more goals to nil, and the Island was in dire straits at the half way point.

Half time scores Phillip Island 0.4.4 to Fish Creek 5.4.34

There was still belief in the Phillip Island camp that if they could get their running game going they could come home over the top of Fish Creek. Alex Officer provided the spark, finally registering two majors for the Island. Phillip Island’s intensity lifted, and by the end of the quarter the deficit was reduced to 16 points.

Three quarter time scores: Phillip Island 2.6.18 to Fish Creek 5.4.34

The last quarter was a cracker, with Phillip Island gradually wearing down their Fish Creek opponents. Goals to Ayden Froud, Tim Van Cuylenburg and Justin Cleeland gave Phillip Island a 4 point lead, which they held onto until the final siren. Given the way they played for much of the game, it was a great win for Phillip Island.
