Phillip Island v Korumburra (Away)
View Current Ladder and Results
Phillip Island travelled to Korumburra this week for the Battle of the Bulldogs and was met with heavy and muddy ground conditions due to the past week’s downfall. This slowed down players from both sides throughout the match and at times the game was very scrappy. The Island welcomed Brian Potter and Travis Winder for their first senior games of the year and Potter had an immediate impact around the ground. K-B was doing most of the attacking with the aid of the breeze, but inaccurate kicking let the Island off the hook. Burra kicked the first goal of the match and looked to have the strength up forward to kick a winning score. Stock marked and goaled for the Island towards the end of the quarter, but Burra still managed to hold onto a slender lead.
Q-time score:
Phillip Island 1.1.7 - Korumburra-Bena 1.5.11
The game hotted up in the 2nd quarter, with players having little time to dispose of the ball due to the pressure applied by both sides. Riky and Robinson were terrific under pressure and both worked forward to kick goals, giving the Island the upper hand. The quarter was quite even in terms of general play, but the Island used the wind to their advantage and the backline led by J.Docherty kept Burra’s forwards under wraps.
Half time score:
Phillip Island 3.3.21 - Korumburra-Bena 1.7.13
The 3rd quarter started in a frenzy with the Island producing two clever goals through Riordan and Robinson. J.Dykes was in everything on the ball, helping his side win the disputed ball and pump it inside 50. Z.Vernon once again proved his worth down back, keeping his opponent quiet. But Korumburra were not going down without a fight, and bounced back with two goals in as many minutes to reduce the Island’s advantage. Scoring came to a dead end with both teams failing to trouble the scoreboard for the rest of the quarter and the match shaping up for an exciting finish.
3 q-time score:
Phillip Island 5.5.35 - Korumburra-Bena 3.8.24
The final term started with J. Dykes kicking a beauty of a goal before Riordan kicked another to stretch the lead to 20pts. Burra replied soon after with a goal of their own but this would be the final hurrah for the home side, with Phillip Island running all over them and dominating the rest of the match. J. Dykes goaled again to cap off an impressive game and Potter was doing as he pleased marking everything that came his way. The Island kicked two more goals to double the opposition’s score in a low scoring affair. The Phillip Island side showed good form to win at Korumburra for the first time since entering the Alberton League and will be looking for another win next week when they face Inverloch-Kongwak at home.
