Phillip Island v Inverloch-Kongwak (Away)
View Current Ladder and Results
Phillip Island travelled to Inverloch this week for the final game of the 2010 home and away season against Inverloch-Kongwak. The forecast of strong winds was nowhere to be seen at Inverloch with great weather for footy and the ground looking the goods for the upcoming grand final. The result of the match had no importance in relation to ladder positions, but it was an opportunity to gain momentum going into finals for the Island, and the I-K side was looking to win for pride. Proceedings began with the Sea Eagles full of running, and made the Island work hard for every possession. The Bulldogs seemed to have their measure, with the likes of J.Dykes and Riky winning the ball in the clinches and clearing the ball from the stoppages. Price and Daff were proving a formidable combination in the ruck, giving the Island first use and causing headaches when resting forward. I-K showed they weren’t going down without a fight in the first quarter, matching a team destined for finals action on their home turf.
Q-time score: Phillip Island 3.4.22 - Inverloch-Kongwak 2.2.14
The home side stepped it up after quarter time, applying great physical pressure and making the most of their opportunities. The Island looked flustered and was making critical skill errors, playing into the hands of the Sea Eagles. They managed to break away from the Island with a few goals before a scuffle broke out which seemed to kick the Bulldogs into action. Led by youngsters Cleeland and Price, the Island fought back and got a couple of goals of their own to cut the lead. This made for a contest going into half time, with the Bulldog’s best football was ahead of them after a lacklustre first half.
Half time score: Phillip Island 5.7.37 - Inverloch-Kongwak 6.7.43
The Island responded to the challenge after half time, lifting their work rate and winning more of the ball. J.Dykes was in everything, and the likes of Guilmartin and Oke, who returned to the senior side this week, began to fire. The Island was now full of run and attack as the opposition began to tire and the Bulldog’s superior fitness showed. Price provided the spark up forward, kicking a goal from long range before a strong pack mark in the goal square provided another six-pointer. Cleeland followed this up with a classic roving snap to ignite the Island and put them into a winning position at the final change.
3q time score: Phillip Island 9.10.64 - Inverloch-Kongwak 7.8.50
Despite the best efforts of the Sea Eagles in their final match of the season, the Phillip Island lads held on to their lead and came away with the win. J.Dykes capped off a great game with another fine quarter of football, S.Docherty provided plenty of run out of the backline and Terlich got himself into the game. The Phillip Island side can now look forward to their finals campaign starting this week at Foster on Saturday in the 3rd vs 6th Elimination Final. Their opponent is yet to be decided due to a dispute in results so the Bulldogs will face either Tarwin or Korumburra-Bena. It will be a big day for the Phillip Island Football Club at Foster on Saturday with the Seniors, Reserves and Fourths playing and 3 netball sides so the Island faithful will be up and about.
