Phillip Island was at home once again this week, hosting Korumburra-Bena in the Battle of the Bulldogs. It was a special day for the Phillip Island Football Club, with many of the 1990 premiership players at the game for the weekend reunion and the guard of honour provided by the past players spurred on the Island senior side of 2010. The Island were on from the word go, with the usual suspects in Murdoch and B.Vernon providing run and carry. C.Dykes kicked the first goal to give the home side the jump, before two players back into the senior side, Brown and Richards, kicked truly to extend the lead. Youngster Price was having an enthralling contest with the K-B’s experienced ruckmen Bradley, and managed to pick up many possessions around the ground. The visitors fought back with a goal towards the end of the quarter to reduce the lead, before play tightened up and scoring halted.

Korumburra-Bena hit back in the 2nd quarter, putting the pressure on the Island and forcing turnovers which resulted in four unanswered goals to even up the contest. B.Vernon and Richards were working hard for the home side, whilst Price continued to contest well in the ruck. Approaching time on, the Island lifted their work rate and a goal to McDonnell changed the momentum. This was quickly followed by goals to B.Vernon and J.Docherty to give the Island the ascendency going into the long break.

The Island looked the goods after half time, winning the contested ball and providing the forward line with plenty of opportunities. Murdoch finished off hard work upfield with a calculated snap, but the home side failed to breakaway as K-B failed to give in.

Robinson was doing the grunt work for the Island, clearing the ball out of the packs and feeding his teammates. Cleeland ran onto a loose ball and soccered it through the middle of goal, but inaccurate kicking kept K-B in the game. The visitors were up to the challenge, and two goals before the 3q time siren made the game up for grabs going into the final stanza.

The K-B side came out from the final break pumped up whilst the Island looked a little lacklustre. K-B kicked a goal in the first few minutes to reduce the deficit to 10pts, before the game became full of stoppages and lost it’s free flowing nature. Captain Riky stood up for the Island and another stalwart in Terlich stepped up in the final term to get the ball going their way. K-B were not going down without a fight, kicking another goal to bring the difference to within a kick. Behinds to both sides followed as no player was able to seal the deal with a goal. Murdoch broke the trend with a great goal to create a defendable lead, and a number of game saving marks by Daff allowed the Island to record a 7pt win in a great game of football. This was a much needed win and will no doubt strengthen Phillip Island’s position on the ladder.
