Phillip Island took the short drive down the highway this week to do battle with fierce rival Kilcunda-Bass. Terrible conditions awaited the sides at the start of the match, as recent rain combined with three games of football destroyed the Bass oval and left it resembling a mud flat. The conditions made for an old fashioned slog which led to a low scoring final result. The start of the match gave people at the ground a glimpse of what was to come, as play was restricted to packs of players and rushed kicks forward to gain metres. B.Vernon was going head to head with K-B’s O’Bryan, with both winning plenty of possessions and showing why they are class players. Whilst both sides were winning their fair share of the ball, the home side capitalised on a lucky break to kick the first goal. McDonnell was using his strong body to get the ball going the Island’s way, but the forward line was failing to function effectively. The Panthers made the most of the forward entries by kicking another goal to give them a vital lead at the first change, with goals priceless in a low scoring affair.

Q-time score: Phillip Island 0.1.1 - Kilcunda-Bass 2.1.13

The 2nd quarter began with the Bulldogs on top, working the ball forward of centre and creating scoring opportunities. But the Island could not make the most of these opportunities and could only scramble through behinds. Although the Island winning more contests around the ground thanks to the likes of C.Dykes, Z.Vernon and Youle, it was the Panthers who did the damage on the scoreboard, with their one score for the quarter being a goal.0.5 for the quarter kept the Island in the game, but the inability to kick goals would prove costly.

Half-time score: Phillip Island 0.6.6 - Kilcunda Bass 3.1.19

After half time the Bulldogs came out hard and were looking like a side that could run away with the game. B.Vernon and Youle were giving 100% effort, which inspired their teammates and brought all players into the game. The Island battled hard for a period of time before they finally got the breakthrough, with a ball bombed forward kicked off the ground from inside the goal square by Daff. The Bulldogs were smashing the home side in inside 50s, but the Panthers defence held firm and prevented any further scores for the Island. The home side then managed to get the ball forward for a set shot which was successful and put them in the box seat to win the match.

3q-time score: Phillip Island 1.6.12 - Kilcunda-Bass 4.1.25

The final quarter continued on as a scrappy slog and at times it was difficult to distinguish what team each player was on due to the majority of players being covered in mud. The Bulldogs were throwing everything at the Panthers, but could not find the reward from their efforts. The home side played with a more defensive mindset which made the task much harder for the Island, and showed how important early goals on the board are in these types of conditions. Full credit to Kilcunda-Bass who handled the conditions better on the day, which leaves the Island with some work to do to get their season back on track.
