Phillip Island v MDU (Away)
View Current Ladder and Results
Phillip Island travelled to Meeniyan this week to take on the Demons with much at stake. The week’s rain combined with the three previous games wreaked havoc with the ground and made for trying conditions. The match started with both teams coping with the conditions and general play was quite even. The Island looked dangerous with veterans Richardson and Riky relishing the conditions and Murdoch lurking in the forward line. In his first senior game, Mitch Price gave the Island faithful a glimpse of what he is capable of with a courageous pack mark, and presented well across half forward. The away side had their chances to get the early breakthrough, but failed to capitalise on their forward entries. MDU on the other hand were comfortable on their home patch and made the Bulldogs pay by kicking the only goal for the quarter.
Q-time score: Phillip Island 0.3-3 – M.D.U. 1.2-8
The second quarter belonged to the Demons as they started to take control on their home patch. Daff was giving his all to minimize MDU’s dominant ruckmen Epa, but his influence started to show and his side started to win the clearances. This resulted in two goals in an instance to dent the Bulldog’s confidence. The Bulldog’s structures were being affected by the conditions and if not for the efforts of McDonnell on the ball and Z.Vernon down back, the game would have been out of their grasp.
Half-time score: Phillip Island 0.6.6 - M.D.U.4.6.30
After half time the Bulldogs came out and showed much more energy and enthusiasm for the contest which resulted in a hard earned goal to Murdoch. But MDU showed why they are a much improved side as they had replied moments later to retain the ascendency. B.Vernon pushed forward and kicked the Island’s second goal to give them some hope, but once again, MDU produced the goods with two goals to end the quarter and effectively put the Island out of the contest at 3q time in a low scoring contest.
3q-time score: Phillip Island 2.6-18 – M.D.U. 7.7-49
The last quarter was no spectacle as the spark went out of the game. The Bulldogs gave their all but it was not their day as the Demons adjusted to the conditions better. The home side kicked one goal for the quarter to the Island’s none and showed they are a finals contender. The Island’s Youle never gave in and can hold his head up high after playing a great run with role to nullify MDU’s captain Atkins. The Phillip Island side now face many great tests in the lead up to the finals in what should prove to be an interesting finale to the season.
Seniors: Phillip Island 2.12-24 lost to M.D.U 8.8-56
