Phillip Island v Yarram (Away)
View Current Ladder and Results
Phillip Island made the long trip down the coast to Yarram to face a side that has troubled them in recent times. Jarrod Sunderland and Mitch Guy were up for their first senior game, and the Island was looking to come away with a win. The Island started slowly after the long drive, and the home side took advantage of this and kick the first goal in the opening minutes. Hard work from the backline led by Stock and Z.Vernon kept the Yarram forwards under control and allowed the side to start attacking from the back half and resulted in a flurry of goals to Riky, McDonnell and B.Vernon. The Demons hit back halfway through the quarter to reduce the difference, but scoring was halted soon after as the Bulldogs skill level let them down and the backline held tight.
Q-time score:
Phillip Island 3.3.21 - Yarram 2.2.14
The 2nd quarter started much the same as the 1st ended with the Island winning the ball but failing to execute skills due to the pressure applied from the opposition. The pressure resulted in turnovers and the home side showed how it’s done by kicking two goals in succession. McDonnell and B.Vernon were starting to get the ball going the Island’s way where the forward combination of Weir and young Sam Docherty started to get some clean ball out of the centre resulting in back to back goals for the pair. This gave the Island a 10pt buffer going into the main break, although the Bulldogs best football was ahead of them.
Half-time score:
Phillip Island 5.7.37 - Yarram 4.3.27
The 3rd quarter was a real battle with both sides throwing everything at the contest and the clash became fiery at times. The physicality of the match stepped up and play was even for most of the quarter. Yarram struck first to cut the lead, but the Island soon replied through Murdoch who was lively up forward. Defenders Z.Vernon and J.Docherty were spoiling anything that came their way in the air and the rebound from Youle mopping up provided some run for the Bulldogs. Terlich goaled to extend the lead, and after a slight pause in scoring the Demons fought back with a goal of their own. A move up forward for B.Vernon produced the goods with a goal before Murdoch kicked another to create a solid lead and set up for the win.
3q-time score:
Phillip Island 9.12.66 - Yarram 6.6.42
The final term began with the Bulldogs coming out all guns blazing, playing a ruthless brand of football to destroy the home side. Four goals in the first five minutes put the result beyond doubt and gave Phillip Island their 2nd victory over Yarram in 5 years of playing in the Alberton League. Some attacking football from Murdoch, kicking three goals for the quarter to take his total to five for the day, capped off a polished performance. Yarram fought back with a few goals of their own as the Island took their foot off the pedal but this was to no avail as Potter goaled for the Bulldogs to run out 42pt winners. This was a great result for the side in the longest road trip of the year.
